History of Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Origins
Historically, this incredibly dense, rugged forest tract served as a highly protective, completely impenetrable base for the legendary Odia freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai. He famously used the thick, confusing jungles to confidently launch daring guerrilla attacks against the advancing British colonial forces.
Evolution
Recognizing its immense, unparalleled ecological value, it was officially declared a protected wildlife sanctuary in 1985 to properly preserve its rich regional biodiversity. Strict, aggressive anti-poaching measures gradually allowed the local, threatened leopard and bison populations to rapidly bounce back and thrive.
Rediscovery
In recent years, the massive sanctuary has been highly successfully developed into a prominent, extremely well-managed eco-tourism hub. It now offers highly sustainable, expertly guided jungle safaris that provide incredible, close-up wildlife encounters without severely disrupting the fragile natural habitat.
Significance
The massive sanctuary actively protects critical, increasingly rare dry deciduous forests while the adjacent, massive Hirakud reservoir uniquely supports millions of vital winter migratory birds. It proudly stands as a perfect, shining example of highly successful, deeply balanced wilderness conservation in western Odisha.
